There seems to be more excitement  on this film recording than the stage CD. The pace is a little faster and the orchestration a little fuller, whether this makes it more rewarding for the listener is purely a matter of personal preference. I admit I find John Travolta's accent a bit strange but then, this is not a great musical it's a comedy musical aimed at all ages. Nice.****.

It is an outstanding achievement to get almost a whole show onto a CD,but here it has been  successfully done.....almost. Glenn Close is perfect  as Norma Desmond although some people prefer the vocal professionalism of Patti LaPone. It is opening in the West End in April next year and we will get to see Glenn Closes's performance onstage, however this album is available and it is a five star treat.*****.

Seldom performed by British Amateur societies it is nonetheless a funny cartoonlike musical. The album is great fun and some of the songs are familiar. My only carp is the occasional sharp vocal of Gabey...  a small problem but occasionally he is loud.
Orchestrally brilliant with most of the dancing material included. Never a particular favourite with
British audiences ....Too American. The film lost most of the music and here, on this CD, you can hear how it first sounded on Broadway. 5stars*****.

An attractive score especially the songs sung by Anna Maria Alberghetti. The word charming
comes to mind and I still enjoy the album after forty years. I suppose it is a little dated when
placed against today's musical outputs. Written by Bob Merrill I suppose it cannot be updated
for modern audiences which is a pity. It was perhaps one of the first "concept" musicals and
very cleverly and attractively staged. I can certainly recommend it to those fans that like their
musicals from the Rogers and Hammanstein era.

Wonderful Irving Berlin score featuring so many songs that have become standards that it leaves
me breathless to realise how professional this musical songwriter was. I have produced the show
and know the songs keep the show going because of their familiarity....but it does always need
a little fixing and updating. I put a catwalk around the orchestra to enable easy scene changes and to
bring the songs and performers closer to their audience. This gives the show a kick, and allows for
more glamorous sets.  In this particular version they have cut "I'm an indian too" and "Colonel
Buffalo Bill" but included the two ingenue songs  which always gave me problems on my
production. Added here, is "Old Fashioned wedding" which is a good duet for the two main leads
but gives them even more to do in the show.  To get new audiences to appreciate it ...something
extra needs to be done. The CD is fine if sometimes Bernadette Peters over eggs some of the
lyrics but you won't find a better recording with it's updated orchestral performances. ****.

An excellent musical of it's type.  In the sixties, it was a very hip dance musical that was greatly
appreciated by youth followers. It's appeal did not continue with older folk however and it has never
been revived with great success. This album demonstrates the loss. Gwen Verdon's performance
has never been bettered and this is a far more 'real' album than the Shirley McLaine film album
although I do miss the persuasive singing of Sammy Davis Jnr as Big Daddy. An enjoyable CD. ****.
